How Immigration DNA Testing Works

DNA relationship analysis is an important tool that can help strengthen applications to allow family members to immigrate to the United States. Application for immigration to the United States and Canada often requires documentation of the biological relationship between a petitioner and beneficiary. The US Department of Immigration and Naturalization Services requires that proof of relationship be established through Immigration DNA testing by an American Association of Blood Banks (AABB) accredited laboratory (.PDF, 21K).

Like paternity DNA testing, immigration DNA testing is based on the Mendelian laws of inheritance. Family members share similar patterns of DNA. By analyzing these patterns, the type of relationship between two individuals can be determined.

Samples of DNA-containing material taken from the petitioner and beneficiary are collected through our international network of DNA testing collection centers. The chain of custody for these samples is closely monitored to ensure that they can be used by the Department of Homeland Security. Once the samples are analyzed by the laboratory, the results are sent to DHS/US embassy.
