BRT Laboratories, Inc. uses polymerase chain reaction (PCR) of short tandem repeat (STR) loci for the chimerism analysis of test samples. Initially, 15 STR loci commonly used in human identification forensics are tested. An additional 9 loci are available for this analysis, if necessary, virtually ensuring the utility of this test battery for all donor/recipient pairs except identical twins.

The analysis for chimerism after a hematopoietic stem cell transplant involves identifying the genetic profiles of the recipient and the donor. The genetic profiles are evaluated to determine if a mixture is present of donor and recipient cells and to what extent each individual contributes to the mixture.
