Can a Paternity DNA Test - Prenatal Testing - Be Done Before a Child is Born?

Yes. Paternity DNA testing can be done before a child is born. This is called prenatal testing.

Standard buccal (cheek swab) samples are collected on the mother and the alleged father. In addition, a prenatal sample of the child is collected in one of two ways:

  • a chorionic villi sample can be taken at 10-13 weeks pregnant,
  • an amniotic fluid sample can be taken at 14-24 weeks pregnant.

These samples must be collected by the mother's obstetrician. The testing will take approximately one week to complete after BRT Laboratories receives the prenatal sample and the mother and alleged-father sample.
