How immigration testing works
DNA relationship analysis is an important tool that can help strengthen applications to allow family members to immigrate to the United States. Application for immigration to the United States and Canada often requires documentation of the biological relationship between a petitioner and beneficiary. The US Department of Immigration and Naturalization services requires that the proof of relationship be established by an American Association of Blood Banks (AABB) accredited laboratory.
How does it work?
Like paternity testing, DNA relationship analysis for immigration is based on the Mendelian laws of inheritance. Family members share similar patterns of DNA. By analyzing these patterns, the type of relationship between to individuals can be determined.
Samples of DNA-containing material taken from the petitioner and beneficiary are collected through our international network of collection centers. The chain of custody for these samples is closely monitored to ensure that they can be used with DHS. The samples are sent to the laboratory for analysis. Once analyzed, the results are sent to DHS/US embassy.
